The Connecticut Department of Public Health recently released a report stating that there could be high levels of arsenic or uranium in wells throughout parts of the state.
According to the report, an updated U.S. Geological Survey study showed the following:
According to the CDC, arsenic occurs naturally in rocks and soil and is used for a variety of purposes within industry and agriculture. It is also a byproduct of copper smelting, mining, and coal burning.
Naturally-occurring uranium is the result of dissolving or eroding soils and rocks that contain uranium. It's more likely to have higher levels in drilled wells when the water flows from cracks or fractures in bedrock than in shallow dug or bored wells and surface water supplies.
Since arsenic and uranium are naturally occurring metals in bedrock around the world, wells drilled into bedrock aquifers can sometimes produce water containing arsenic or uranium.
According to the new report: "Arsenic exposure has been related to increased cancer risk, low birth weight, decreased child intellectual development, immune system suppression and other adverse health outcomes. Ingestion of uranium, such as through drinking water, has been associated with kidney disease."
